PBS Continued Dispensing

WHY THIS MATTERS

Most Australians have never heard of PBS Continued Dispensing. It's the provision that allows a pharmacist to supply a PBS medicine — without a prescription — when you're in an urgent situation and can't get to a doctor. Knowing it exists could change an emergency.

Here's how it works in practice:

1
Call the pharmacy

Explain you're a remote traveller and you've run out of a regular PBS medication. Ask if they can supply under Continued Dispensing. Not all pharmacies will — the toolkit includes a finder for those that do.

2
Telehealth eScript

If Continued Dispensing isn't available, a telehealth consult can generate an eScript sent directly to any participating pharmacy. This works from anywhere with a signal — including satellite.

3
PBS Continued Dispensing

One month's supply, standard PBS co-payment. The pharmacist documents it and informs your GP. Not available for all medications — Schedule 8 substances require different arrangements. The toolkit covers both.
